Under Habsburg rule, Upper Austria became a center of trade and industry and its population grew significantly.
Let's start off with some basic facts about the state. Upper Austria or Oberösterreich is one of nine states in Austria. It shares borders with the Czech Republic to the north, the state of Lower Austria to the east, the state of Styria to the south and the state of Salzburg to the southwest. To the west is Germany and to the north is the state of Linz am Rhein. The capital of Upper Austria is Linz, although Graz was once the capital of the Duchy of Austria.
According to legend, the name Austria comes from the Eostari, an ancient Germanic tribe that lived in the eastern Alps during the time of the Roman Empire. During the Battle of Caransebes in 955, a coalition of Germanic tribes led by the Eostari defeated the invading Magyars. After the battle, the Eostari established a duchy in the region, which later became known as Austria. However, it's important to note that there is no solid evidence to support this claim and it remains a popular myth.
In the 18th century, Upper Austria was one of the wealthiest and most populous regions of the Habsburg monarchy. However, following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, the Congress of Vienna transferred Salzburg to the Kingdom of Bavaria. This was a significant event because it marked the end of Habsburg rule in Upper Austria. The region was divided between the Bavarian Kingdom and the Austrian Empire. Finally, let's discuss some interesting facts about Upper Austria. The state is home to the oldest zoo in Austria, the Zoo Linz, which was founded in 1857. Upper Austria is also known for its traditional costume which varies from region to region but typically includes a dirndl or a traditional dress for women and lederhosen or leather breeches for men. Furthermore, the state is home to several castles and palaces including the magnificent Schloss Fohnsberg, the summer residence of the Habsburg emperors and the Baroque masterpiece Schloss Esterhazy.
